Two engineering majors at George Mason University have invented a new firefighting device that may one day revolutionize the industry. This device is incredible because it uses sound waves to put out fires, not water, not foam, not CO2, sound waves! Unfortunately, the word ‘prepper‘ is now attached to several negative stereotypes and may conjure up images of camo-clad, gun slinging, bunker dwelling folks. In reality, preppers […]

When it comes to fire safety, you need to separate fact from fiction, reality from myth, truth from lie. In the heat of the moment (pun intended), you cannot afford to make a mistake. The science behind it is that the pressure waves displace oxygen and as we all learn in elementary school, fires […]

In 2013, construction workers in New York City attached the spire to the top of the One World Trade Center skyscraper, more commonly known as Freedom Tower, vaulting the building to a patriotically-symbolic height of 1,776 feet. One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) in New York City is now the world’s third tallest skyscraper. With the […]

Living in a high-rise building offers many benefits: beautiful and expansive views, a prime location right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of city life, a great sense of community, and often, a number of included amenities. However, there are also a few drawbacks to living in a big building in a big […]

In 2014 we saw the completion of One World Trade Center in New York City, but 2015 will be mark the completion of an even bigger building and many other huge skyscrapers. It will be amazing to see their completion, some of them in fast developing cities in Asia and the Middle East. Here is a list of […]

aven’t you always wanted to park right next to your high-rise home? Well in at least one Singapore high-rise this dream is now a reality. It looks like a really cool system that could one day become more popular in other luxury high-rises, that is, until we have flying cars.

WinSun, a Chinese Engineering company, has successfully constructed a six-story apartment building using a 3D printer to build the parts. The 3D printer they used is massive, measuring 20 feet high, 33 feet wide, and 132 feet long. Each part of the building was printed at WinSun’s facility and then the parts assembled at the site. As you can imagine, […]

The trend of using wood to construct tall buildings has already taken hold in Europe and is quickly spreading to North America. Currently, Norway boasts the world’s tallest wood building, a structure that stands 14 stories tall and is built using CLT (cross-laminated timber). The building has a very small carbon footprint, severely reduces construction waste, and is comparable in cost […]

The list is filled with some fascinating structures, some which have held the title of tallest building […]

To say the Burj Khalifa is a tall building is a bit of an understatement. One cannot help spotting it when visiting Dubai. It’s been the world’s tallest building since it’s completion in 2009 but will most likely lose that distinguished title in 2019. The following are nine amazing facts about the Burj Khalifa: The […]

Since the first skyscraper was built in 1890 in New York, skyscrapers have become irrevocably linked to the city as a symbol of its power and prosperity. New York skyscrapers have been immortalized by many works of art and culture, with the city’s iconic skyline providing memorable backgrounds to movies and TV series such as […]

From the beginning, you knew Tom Cruise was going to be a star. Starting with movies such as Risky Business and The Color of Money, you could see that he had the acting chops. Then he started delving into action movies. When you think of James Bond, each generation pictures a different face. Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy […]

2015 was definitely “Year of the SkyScraper,” however, it’s coming to a close, and with 2016 on the horizon, let’s take a look at the tallest skyscrapers set for completion next year. With 17 of the 100 tallest buildings in the world built in 2015, the world continues to build to the skies. China already […]

Currently, the world’s tallest building is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It stands at 2,722 feet or 829.8 meters, holding many other records as detailed in this blog post. Over the coming years, this record will be broken, as countries continue building towards the skies. It seems like the goal is to build higher and higher […]

After just having covered the tallest skyscrapers until the Chrysler Building in 1931, spanning 11 behemoths over 47 years, the following post will be covering everything from the Empire State Building until today, spanning 86 years There have only been 6 tallest buildings in the world during that time frame. They are, however, some of the […]

Many fictional works, whether movies, TV, video games, or literature, use real cities, locations, and buildings, in order to instill more realism or to make them more relatable. When playing a video game set in New York City (such as True Crime: New York) you feel like you know where you are because you’ve been […]

Considered to be the world’s first modern skyscraper, the Home Insurance Building in Chicago was constructed in the late 1800’s. When, however, were some of the first multi-story buildings constructed? How far back into history must we go in order to understand how long this architectural ability has existed to build multiple stories? The Bible […]

There are over 6,000 high-rise buildings in New York City alone. If you’re not from there, and walk around long enough, it all starts to blend together. Everything looks the same. Just tall building after tall building (with the occasional stand-out). Disregarding height, however, what buildings really stand out due to being incredibly unique? What […]

Countries throughout the world are building taller and taller. The countries throughout North America are no exception. The United States, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Belize, and Panama all build to the skies (some of them more than others). Due to the United States having pretty much all the tallest buildings in North […]

Currently, the world’s tallest skyscraper is the Burj Khalifa at 2,717 feet or 830 meters. There are six buildings in the world that stand at over 550 meters tall and only one of them was built before the year 2004 (CN Tower in Toronto). That is about to change. From now, until the year 2020, there are […]

Tall buildings are generally just tall buildings for the most part. Unless they’re particularly tall or have some distinguishing features (see the Robot Building), there’s no real way to tell them apart. A city like New York has so many skyscrapers, they just blend together (apart from the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center). […]

As the 2016 Olympics come to a close in Rio, Brazil, we thought it would be appropriate to continue our series on tallest skyscrapers by continent (see Tallest Skyscrapers in North America), by moving on to the tallest skyscrapers in South America. The rule of limiting each country will not apply here, as we needed to […]

Continuing our series of tallest skyscrapers by continent, we now move on to Asia. While the Middle East is located in Asia, there are so many skyscrapers in the Middle East that the region will get its own post in the future. The skyscrapers we are covering in this post are all located in the […]

What was considered a skyscraper in the late 1800’s would barely be called a high-rise today. As building taller and taller becomes the norm, the average height of skyscrapers goes up. As that happens, people come up with new terms. Until the late 1800’s, skyscraper referring to a very tall building wasn’t a thing. Until […]

Moving forward in our tallest skyscrapers by continent series, we move on to Africa. We previously covered the tallest skyscrapers in North America, South America, and Asia. Africa only has 11 skyscrapers 150 meters or taller. It only has 2 skyscrapers 200 meters or taller. Most of Africa’s tallest buildings are located in South Africa and Egypt, therefore, […]

On New Year’s Eve, approximately 10 months ago, a hotel in Dubai went up in flames. The 63-storey skyscraper was believed to have been engulfed due to a pair of curtains catching fire. The fire spread at an alarming rate, prompting a major investigation. How did the fire spread so fast? Did something fuel it? […]

Skyscrapers continue to be built around the world, many in the far east and middle east. That’s just the direction many countries are going in. Building taller and taller is the trend, and it doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Recently, Shanghai Tower was completed in China and now stands as the world’s second […]

With only one skyscraper above 300 meters and 31 total above the height of 200 meters, Australia has a lot of catching up to do to reach the heights that the Far East and Middle East are reaching. There are, however, at least 50 skyscrapers in the proposal, approval, or constructions phases of development, that […]

The Empire State Building. The Burj Khalifa. One World Trade Center. The Chrysler Building. Sears Tower. These are but some of the most famous skyscrapers in the world. They tower over everything, giving cities a larger than life feel. Just looking at one of these gigantic architectural wonders makes one feel small and insignificant. Sometimes […]

While covering the tallest skyscrapers by continent, we have split Asia into two parts. We covered the tallest skyscrapers in Asia in a previous blog post, but did not include any skyscrapers from the Middle East. There are so many, that it was deserving of its own post. Just the United Arab Emirates alone has […]

As we near the end of 2016, let’s take a look at some of the most impressive skyscrapers built over the course of the year. This year gave us four out of the top ten tallest skyscrapers in the world, as well as five of the top twenty. There was a one hundred percent increase […]

As 2016 comes to a close, we look ahead to next year. While 2016 saw the completion of Shanghai Tower, the second tallest building in the world, 2017 will see the completion of even more architectural marvels. While none will reach the same stature, 2017 remains a year to look forward to for skyscraper enthusiasts. […]

For the next post in our series on tallest skyscrapers around the world, we move over to Europe. As was the case in Asia (where most of the tallest skyscrapers are located in China), and North America (where most of the tallest skyscrapers are located in the United States), most of the tallest skyscrapers in […]

An apartment can become a death trap in a matter of minutes, should a fire break out. There are only so many egress points (especially for one living very high up), which is why it is best to prevent fire, so escaping it doesn’t become the issue. Obviously, it’s not 100% preventable, which is why […]

We keep life-saving devices nearby when we go on a boat, a plane, or even into the backcountry. But when we go to work or arrive home on the 15th floor of a high-rise, the stairs are likely our only escape plan. Until now. Israeli firm SkySaverUSA has created a portable escape system that looks and acts like […]

Many of the injuries and fatalities that occur during multi-story building fires are the result of occupants being unable to safely evacuate in time.SkySaver Inc. was founded in order to save lives and to become the leader in multi-story rescue and evacuation solutions. One of their most impressive innovations is the SkySaver; the ultimate personal rescue device for anyone […]

Skysaver is a set of equipment that will help the user get out of the window of the building. The entire system fits into a compact backpack that can be discreetly positioned near the window opening.

There is now rescue gear that can even be used by terrified people who cannot cope with rappelling. In the backpack is a harness and a mechanical cable that automatically lowers a person to the ground at a speed of 2 m / s. (Swedish)

In Singapore, most of us live in high rise buildings. When it comes to escape route during an emergency, it is always limited to staircases. Of course, over the years, the stair wells have improved. Most modern buildings come with fire retardant doors (e.g. front door, stair well) to prevent fire from coming in (not […]

SkySaver was one of 18 life-saving innovations by Israeli companies featured by the ISRAEL21c online news magazine in May 2014 to mark Israel’s 66th birthday.SkySaver was featured along with other examples of Israeli ingenuity that benefit humankind, such as emergency bandages, new driving technologies, a baby breathing monitor and a harness for carrying injured people like […]

A backpack fitted with up to 260 feet of cable and able to automatically lower its wearer down the side of a building could become must-have gear for troops training for urban combat.

If you work in an office on a floor higher than you can survive jumping out the window from, you might want to consider stashing one of these under your desk. The SkySaver is a backpack that has a auto braking system for a controlled descent.

We can’t imagine too many people think daily about what they’ll do if they ever have the misfortune of being caught in a burning building. It’s a terrifying thought, and we understandably don’t spend our waking hours thinking about all the horrible things that could happen to us. Still, if you’ve ever experienced this nightmare, […]

Described as the “ultimate portable survival kit for occupants of a multi-story building,” it’s a backpack housing an integrated cable system that you can use to safely escape through the window during emergencies. Simply clip the cable to a secure anchor point, exit the nearest window, and start making your way down – the onboard […]

SkySaver’s backpack is a self-contained portable escape system that anyone can operate to escape present danger. In the event of an emergency, one can strap on the backpack, attach the fire-resistant cable to a secure anchor point, and exit the nearest window.

Live in a high-rise building and don’t trust your cooking skills? SkySaver is an altogether different sort of backpack that can save your life in the event of an apartment fire — by giving you a fire-resistant rope to help you rappel down the building.

Every year, there are over 16,000 high-rise fires in the U.S. alone – and many more in other countries with a large number of tall buildings. These fires typically cause ± 60 deaths and 1000 injuries each year in the U.S. – many due to inadequate evacuation procedures or lack of safe exits – in […]

If a fire or other disaster strikes a multi-story buildings, SkySaver makes escaping easy, and from much higher up than bulky window ladders. Strap the backpack on, clip its carabiner — at the end of a fire resistant cable — to a pre-installed anchor point, and then climb out the window.

SkySaver backpacks are intended to serve as simple, practical escapes from multi-story buildings during fires, terrorist attacks, or other life-threatening situations. They come with cable lengths of 80′, 160′, or 260′, and all have been tested according to ASTM and ANSI standards.

The National Fire Protection Association estimates that 60 people die in high-rise fires each year. Another thousand people are seriously injured.Which is why Ken Frydman and the team at SkySaver created a personal life saving back pack for multi-story rescues and evacuations.“It’s been tested in every possible situation: heat, cold, pressure,” said Frydman.
